Morgan wraps road trip Monday at NC Central

BALTIMORE, Md. —  Morgan State (6-11, 4-1 MEAC) will travel to Durham, N.C. to take on North Carolina Central on Monday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.  The Eagles (13-5, 4-1 MEAC) rolled past Coppin State 87-63 at home on Saturday and is currently riding a 5-game winning streak. The Bears will enter the contest attempting to bounce back from a disappointing 88-87 overtime loss at N.C. A&T.SCOUTING THE EAGLES

The Eagles welcomed back seven veterans, including two starters, from a squad that posted a 22-9 overall record, and finished second place in the MEAC with an impressive 15-1 record. Jeremy Ingram (19.6 ppg) and Alfonzo Houston (10.6 ppg) lead the Eagles in scoring. Ingram not only leads the MEAC in scoring, but he also ranks among the leading scorers in the nation (Ranked No. 32).  Jay Copeland controls the boards for the Eagles by averaging 6.5 rpg to go along with 9 ppg. Levelle Moton enters his fifth season as the Eagles’ head coach where he currently holds a 74-66 record. Jeremy Ingram scored 24 points as the Eagles controlled a decisive 87-63 victory over Coppin State on Saturday. Ingram amassed 18 of his points in the first half to put N.C. Central up 50-37 at the break.

AVOIDING ROAD KILL

This season’s schedule will send MSU on the road for 14 games, including a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. With an 88-87 overtime loss against North Carolina A&T the Bears fell to 2-7 on the season.

THREE IN DOUBLE FIGURES

Thru 17 games last season, three Bears averaged more than 10 points a game. Justin Black leads with by averaging 18.8 ppg (No. 3 in MEAC), Ian Chiles averages 15.1 points per game, while Anthony Hubbard is averaging 11.4 points and leads the squad averaging 6.7 rebounds on the boards (ranks No. 8 in MEAC).

BLACK A MEMBER OF THE 1,000 POINTS CLUB 

Senior guard Justin Black eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his career as a result of his 24-point outing against Cal State Northridge (12/27) … Black currently has 1,119 career points.

THREES & FREES

The Bears currently rank last (13th) in the MEAC in three-pointers made (4.6 per game) and last in three-point accuracy (27 percent). Morgan State hit a season-high eight from beyond the arc against Cal State Northridge on Dec. 18 vs. High Point, setting a season high for makes. MSU is averaging 24 FTAs per night and rank last in the MEAC in FTs made per game (14) and last in FT accuracy (240-406 – .591 pct).

THEIVES IN THE NIGHT

Two Bears are averaging better than 1.0 steals per game – Justin Black (2.1 – ranks No. 2 in MEAC), and Donte Pretlow (1.8 – No. 4). Morgan State is also No. 2 in the MEAC by averaging 7.4 steals per game.

TOUGH IN THE PAINT

Ian Chiles, Cedric Blossom and Thair Heath are shooting better than .500 from the field this year. Thru the first 17 games Chiles is shooting 56.5 pct (ranks No. 5 in MEAC). Heath is shooting 57.1 pct., while frontcourt teammate Blossom is shooting 51.3 pct from the floor.

WELCOME TO MY BLOCK PARTY

Ian Chiles has been making the most of his 7-foot-2 frame. The senior recorded a career-high 7 blocked shots against Marist on 11/25. He’s currently ranked No. 2 in the MEAC averaging 2.9 rejections per contest and now has 148 career blocks.

THE 3-HEADED GRIZZLY

In the first five conference matchups this season Justin Black, ian Chiles and Anthony Hubbard have scored 234 points, while the rest of the squad has produced 160 points. In the blowout of Howard, the trio combined to score 39 points with Black scored a team-high 17 points. Against South Carolina State, the trio accounted for 37 of the Bears’ 73 points. In the last two wins (at Norfolk State and Hampton) the trio averaged 57.5 ppg. The trio has totaled 768 of the team’s 1,164 points, 66 percent of the team’s scoring load.
